Daily Devotion: Roots

From Man Stuff by Josh Turner

Then the Lord said to him, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I will be with you.” –Genesis 31:3

I’ve realized that my boys aren’t growing up in the same kinda world I did. A lot of things have changed since I was a boy. We live a life of hustle and bustle and busyness. So we try to get away and spend time at our cabin. It’s a place we restored and made our own. It sits right behind where I grew up in Hannah,
South Carolina.

I think it’s valuable for me to go there to remember my roots. There are dirt roads and farms and struggling families— it’s the world I grew up in. I also think it’s good for my boys to be around people who place value in the simple things and in each other more than in what they drive or what they wear. We go to the cabin to get away. But we also go to the cabin to remember—to remember where we came from. Doing this helps us decide things like where to go in the future and who we want to be as a family as well as individually. Most of all, remembering where we came from reminds us of what love looks like.
