Daily Devotions: Only God
From Fire Yourself by Willy Stewart & Theresa Allen
Exodus 20:3 (ESV): “You shall have no other gods before me.”
When God gave the Law to Moses on tablets of stone in the Old Testament, He listed ten moral codes for the children of Israel to live by. The first rule He listed was that the people would not worship another god. Yahweh was to be revered as the one true God. Time and time again, though, the children of Israel broke this law and worshipped foreign gods. They even created idols made from wood, stone, or metals and worshiped them. None of these other gods were true; they were not even alive. In their disobedience and waywardness, the children of Israel brought much pain and suffering upon themselves. Let us be careful, though, lest we judge these people too harshly. Don’t you and I still do the same thing today? Oh, we say with our lips that we serve God alone, but our hearts are far from Him. We do not make Him a priority in our days, and at night we just long for sleep. Our God is often neglected and forgotten. We live like independent orphans until we find ourselves in peril. Then, we cry out to Him and wonder how He could let such tragic things happen to “His children.” Let us learn a lesson from the children of Israel and offer our allegiance to the Almighty. He alone is worthy of praise. He alone is the God who never slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4). He never grows tired or weary (Isaiah 40:28). Yahweh is the one true God. Let us give Him the honor He deserves.
Trust in the one true God today!
