Daily Devotions: Sing Praises

From Fire Yourself by Willy Stewart & Theresa Allen

Acts 16:25 (NIV): “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.”

When all is right with the world, it is easy for us to whistle a happy tune. Let things begin to unravel in our lives, however, and the praises don’t flow quite as easily. A “must know” fact about our God is that He loves for His children to sing praises (Read Psalms 64; 98; 147 – just to name a few!). Why? Because our songs of praise reveal the love, faith, and commitment we have in Him. When our praises go up even though circumstances are bringing us down, the heart of God is stirred into action. Paul and Silas were in the middle of a true crisis. Instead of fretting and worrying, they lifted their voices in honor to God and sung with all their hearts. God showed up, and He showed out! The shackles that bound the apostles did not stand a chance in the presence of the Almighty.

Be encouraged today—the same God that showed up for these men is just a praise away. So, when the weight of the world is on your shoulders … sing praises. When the boss is riding you hard and deadlines are coming due … sing praises. When the washing machine is overflowing and the baby is screaming … sing praises. When the traffic is bumper to bumper and you absolutely cannot be late for your appointment … sing praises. When you lift your voice in worship to the Almighty, He will show up for you!

Sing praises to the Lord today!
